Competition news

It was tight at the top...

On Saturday we held our men's 4BBB Open with the course playing perfectly and the greens running at 11 ft on the stimp metre (that's quick).

Leading the challenge was home pair of Steve 'Billy' Buxton and Nick Nothey on 46 points with the Whelan brothers narrowly losing out on the back nine also on 46 points. Even more unlucky was third place Mark Coley and Pete West who also were on 46 points! Fourth place went to Matt Watson and scratch golfer Dave Lyon on 45 points.

Club Championship finely-poised...

Sunday witnessed the first round of this year's Men's Club Championships.

Like the open the previous day the course was in fantastic condition and our greenkeepers had some 'interesting' pin positions for round one. Leading after Round One with gross 73s is James Newcombe, Ian Mudford and Steve Mudford. Next we have Dave Lyon and Jonny Ebdon both shooting 75, closely followed by Adrian Morgan, Manning Wellman and Scott Love on 76.

Leading the Nett Championship we have new member Barnaby Down on 66, James Newcombe on 68 and the ever-young Chris Browne on 69.

Greenkeeper's report...

Work programme commencing Monday 7th September:

Spray fertiliser on greens (makes the grass plant stronger and healthier against diseases)
Sorrel roll the greens
G.U.R bare areas around green
Check sand levels on bunkers (top up sand if required
Top dress and seed low drain line on 3rd green
Kill weeds on wood chip areas
Start to prepare the course for the second round of club championship

Work done:

Last week was a very busy time for the greenstaff preparing the course to the highest standard possible for the competitions over the next couple weeks. Here is a insight into some of the work done...

Monday

Turfed ironed the greens (green speed stimping at 9ft 6)
Double cut the tees

Tuesday

Single cut/groom the greens (stimping at 9ft)
Lowered height of cut to 3.5mm
Double cut/groom aprons
All bunker edges were trimmed and grass trimmings cleared up (thank you volunteers for clearing up the trimmings)
Rough cut

Wednesday

Single cut and turf ironed greens (stimping at 10ft 5)
Fairways were cut
Holes were changed for the second round of the seniors championship
Started to cut greenside banks and tee banks
Rough cut

Thursday

Turf ironed greens (stimping at 10ft 1)
Greens were sprayed (greens are being monitored daily for any signs of disease and stress due to the height of cut lowered and more work being done on the greens)
Double cut/groom tees
Cut semi rough
Finished cutting greenside banks and tee banks Friday
Single cut and turf ironed greens (stimping at 10ft 2)
Double cut/groom aprons
Holes changed and capped ready for club championship
Semi rough cut/fairways cut/banks cut again (shines up all the stripes for the highest presentation) Saturday
Greens double cut and turf ironed (greens stimping at 11ft 6) Sunday
Greens Single cut and turf ironed (greens stimping at 11ft)

Other work done over the week:

Divoted/seeded tees (thank you volunteer)
Top dressed temporary greens (preparing the greens for the winter)
Cut driving range/strimmed carpark area/main entrance and cut tee
Strimmed long areas where we cannot get to with triple mower
G.U.R bare areas around greens
Filled in rabbit holes and seeded areas
Started to check sand levels in bunkers (put sand in low bunkers)

Next week I will explain what work will be done in maintenance week and also work planned for fairway maintenance.

Try something new this week

Wedges that work for you

Over the past few weeks, we've worked our way through the bag, from hybrids to irons and now to wedges. Each time we've been looking at what we want from each club and how it fits into our bag. So, how well do your wedges compliment the rest of your set?

Make a change

When it comes to smashing one off the tee, there’s always a bit of push-and-pull between striking one as far as you can and simply not sending it out of bounds. For that reason, we could all do with a little forgiveness in a driver.
