Hallmark for Georgia
It was a great week for British golf, as Georgia Hall won her first Major title with a two-shot victory at the Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes. The 22-year-old dropped just three shots throughout the whole tournament, with her putting in particular being absolutely exceptional. Hall was in Sunday’s final group of the same tournament last year, which will make this victory even more special. This should encourage you to keep on pushing yourself and your game forward – it will eventually all fall into place, just like it did for Georgia. Over on the PGA Tour, new world number two Justin Thomas warmed up for his defence of the USPGA Championship by winning the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational after a final-round 69. The American is clearly a fan of the summer months and will now be confident of following up his victory at Quail Hollow last year, with success at Bellerive Golf Course in Missouri this week. The British contingent can take heart from a decent showing in Ohio, too - Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter both started the final round just three shots off the lead, before fading away. McIlroy in particular will be hoping he can put together four rounds of solid golf at Bellerive to give him his first Major win since 2014 - which happened to be the USPGA Championship... |
English Golf Championships U14/U16 This past week we have hosted the U14/U16 English Girls National Championship. The scoring has been outstanding and I’m sure you will all agree the level of golf these youngsters play is phenomenal. We would like to thank all of the members that helped out for all their hard work. You have all done our golf club proud and have showed that if we all put our hard work and minds as a club we are able to hold an event of this level.

New PING i210 and i500 available for fitting I have just received the latest fitting equipment from PING for their brand new i210 and i500 irons! The i210 Is a direct replacement for the excellent i200 irons and the head shape, finish and feel have all been significantly improved. This is the club of choice for Andy Sullivan and Lee Westwood. No greater validation is necessary. If you are a serious player, look no further. In addition, there is the i500. A beautiful design. An easy to hit blade design which is probably the longest iron in the world. These will look gorgeous in the bag, but they are not all style, for there is substance also. A hollow head design means they are tremendously forgiving and because the head is pressure filled, they feel as good as they look. Request your fitting by clicking here or talk to us in store.

Bunkers
Recently we have had a lot of complaints about our bunkers being not raked properly. Can we please remind all of our members to rake the bunkers properly and if they are unsure on how to rake them, here is a link to a video on how to.

Open Support Team 2018 (Jamie Hughes) I set off on my journey to Carnoustie Links on the Wednesday morning with Honiton Greenkeeper Stuart Broom. We arrived at our accommodation (SRUC Elmwood campus in Cupar) and on arrival we were met by the BIGGA team and fifty greenkeepers from all over the country. We were then issued our uniforms and shown to our rooms. At 15.30 we set off in our team buses on our daily 45-minute commute to Carnoustie Golf Club. On arrival we were shown to our BIGGA HQ for the week and shown the starter hut where we had to meet prior to our matches each day. The support team then headed up to the 10th green where we met Sandy Reid (Super Intendant) and Craig Boath (Head Greenkeeper) who were the men in charge of making sure the course was set up correctly for the tournament. They worked closely with the S.T.R.I throughout the week to keep the greens consistent and all running at 10 on the Stimp Meter. During this meeting we were shown round the maintenance facilities and shown how they would want the bunkers to be raked throughout the tournament. It was amazing to hear just how much effort, time and man power that were required to host the biggest golf competition in the world. During each competition day each support team member was given a match number, this allowed people to work out what time they were out on the course and what professionals they had that day. The golfers I had were: - Day 1 - Matt Jones / Tom Curtis / Bronson Burgoon
- Day 2 - Lucas Herbert / Min Chel Choi/ Jason Kokrak
- Day 3 - Day off
- Day 4 - Tony Finau / Zander Lombard
|
Unfortunately, the golfers from day 1 and day 2 all struggled to find any form and were never in contention. I raked the most bunkers out of everyone on day 1 posting a score of 17 rakes. Day 3 resulted in not getting a rake. This was randomly selected due to the cut, 12 of us would miss out on a rake. This outcome happened to work in my favour as it allowed me to follow Tiger Woods around for the day which is incredible when you see the atmosphere and crowds he manages to create.
Overall it was a great experience for myself as a greenkeeper and a golfer. To be on the inside of the ropes throughout an Open Championship and follow them down to the 18th green on the final day is a moment I will never forget. It’s a brilliant opportunity to network with many other greenkeepers and also pick up techniques and tips that I can bring back to Lyme Regis Golf Club and use myself one day. I hope this will be my first of many Open Championships and would love the opportunity to do it again in the future. Here is a flag I had signed by golfers and other stars throughout the week. Jordan Pickford, Paul Laurie, Carl Froch, Tony Finau, Henrik Stenson, Lucas Herbert and Joe Miller. Jamie Hughes - Greenkeeper (Lyme Regis Golf Club)

When tour pros are playing in big events, like the PGA Championship this week, they’ll always have relatively new wedges in their bag to maximise their spin, because worn wedges mean less control.
|
| Why do grooves matter? The grooves are the sole contact point between your ball and the club, imparting backspin to help lift the ball into the air. R&D testing has revealed that after 125 rounds, wedges spin 2,000rpm less than wedges with new grooves and consequently roll 14 feet further on landing - which is huge. What causes wear? All grooves will wear slowly over time due to a number of factors, including gradual wear from play, but golf's equipment manufacturers work hard to limit this. |
| Need to upgrade? Grooves are particularly important on wedges, where pinpoint control is crucial. If yours are looking worn like on the first image above, why not consider the PING Glide 2.0 Stealth wedge (above), which has specialised milled grooves designed to increase spin control on full and partial shots in both dry and wet conditions. It also boasts a half-groove near the leading edge to significantly increase spin on low strikes. |
