Sawgrass has a ‘sting’ in its tail Last week the golfing world descended on Ponte Vedra, Florida for golf’s unofficial fifth major, The Players Championship.
Played on the TPC Sawgrass stadium course, it boasts one of the most iconic holes in the golf, the infamous par three 17th hole. The field included a resurgent Tiger Woods and fans were in awe of his impressive ‘stinger’ off the tee. Tiger started slowly, but weekend rounds of 65 & 69 saw him climb the leaderboard to a tied 11th place. |
|
The eventual winner, Webb Simpson, had become a bit of a forgotten major champion with no win on tour for over 5 years. He had struggled with the ban of the anchored stroke he used for his belly putter. He finally settled on a longer handle that ran up the left side of his arm, and then Tim Clark gave him the missing link at The Players a year ago when Clark suggested he also use a claw grip. Simpson has been working his way back to the golf he expects to play and now ranks 5th in strokes gained putting and holed an unbelievable amount over the stadium course. If you would like to improve your putting or learn how to hit the ‘Tiger stinger’ then speak to a member of the team for a lesson. Contact me here. |

125th Anniversary - Fastest round of Golf
On Friday 13th July, as a part of the 125th anniversary celebrations we are to make an attempt on the world record for “The Fastest Round Of Golf by a Team of Players”. According to the Guinness book this stand at 13 minutes and 52 seconds and is held by Farnham Golf Club. This is somewhat confusing because twenty-five years ago a team accomplished this feat in twelve minutes! There is no limit to the size of the team and so the more members, men, ladies and juniors we have taking part, the greater are our chances of success.
We are hoping that as many of you as possible will join in this piece of enjoyment. Low handicap players will be playing the tee shots and groups of golfers will be positioned ready to advance the ball to the green, where chippers and putters will be holing out. As soon as one hole is completed the next tee shot is struck. The record does not require the same ball to be used throughout the round. We will also need members to indicate the direction of the tee shots and at some holes to telegraph ‘Go’ to the next tee shot. We hope that the press and local TV will take interest which should add to the feel-good factor. The event will take place at 6.00pm and will be followed by a barbecue. |

The start sheets for Golf Week are now up at the Golf Club. You can book a tee time online or come up to the club and put your name down on the start sheets that are available.
