Ireland triumph as others impress Whilst many of you spent the Bank Holiday weekend basking in glorious sunshine – and we don’t blame you – 16 pairs battled it out in the second edition of GolfSixes. Split into four round-robin groups to begin with, only the top two pairs from each could proceed to the quarter-final stage, which saw both all-female teams (England Women and European Women) make it through to the final eight. Sadly, both female teams failed to advance to the semi-finals, with England Women losing out to eventual winners Ireland, represented by Gavin Moynihan (who has failed to make a single cut so far this season) and Paul Dunne. Ahead of golf’s unofficial fifth major taking place at TPC Sawgrass this weekend, Australia’s Jason Day has returned to world’s top 10 after a superb display at the Wells Fargo Championship. Taking place at Quail Hollow – the scene of last year’s PGA Championship – Day shot a gritty 69 on Sunday to finish two clear of his nearest challenger, admitting afterwards that he ‘had no idea where the ball was going, especially off the tee.’ For those of you wondering, yes Tiger Woods did play but he finished in a lowly tied 55th. |

Perfect for cooler rounds Yes, we've enjoyed a record-breaking Early May Bank Holiday weekend without a sweater in sight, but the reality is temperatures will soon get a little cooler over the coming days. To combat the chill whilst on the course, especially early mornings or late evenings, consider a ProQuip quilted windproof, which provide lightweight warmth whilst blocking out any wind. |

Greenkeepers Work Work being done week commencing Monday 7th May: - Spray the greens with a light liquid feed
- Trim greens sprinklers
- Trim junior tee markers
- Trim tee stones
- Start to seed and dress the larger tracked areas from the bunker work
- Fill in temporary holes on the aprons
- Verti cut and groom the greens. Poa (annual meadow grass) seeding is at its worst this time of year, verti cutting and grooming helps to reduce the seeding. This is done early in the week as it stands the grass up making the greens slower. Thursday groomers are lifted out and cutting and power rolling is done to speed the greens up for the weekend.
- Primo (growth regulator) the greens (primo will slow up the poa from seeding)
Work done: - All greens were spiked last week
- Primo (growth regulator) was sprayed on all the tees and long areas of rough
- Fairways that are poor have been fertilised and weed killed
- Greens were power rolled five times last week

125th Anniversary - Fastest round of Golf
On Friday 13th July, as a part of the 125th anniversary celebrations we are to make an attempt on the world record for “The Fastest Round Of Golf by a Team of Players”. According to the Guinness book this stand at 13 minutes and 52 seconds and is held by Farnham Golf Club. This is somewhat confusing because twenty-five years ago a team accomplished this feat in twelve minutes! There is no limit to the size of the team and so the more members, men, ladies and juniors we have taking part, the greater are our chances of success.
We are hoping that as many of you as possible will join in this piece of enjoyment. Low handicap players will be playing the tee shots and groups of golfers will be positioned ready to advance the ball to the green, where chippers and putters will be holing out. As soon as one hole is completed the next tee shot is struck. The record does not require the same ball to be used throughout the round. We will also need members to indicate the direction of the tee shots and at some holes to telegraph ‘Go’ to the next tee shot. We hope that the press and local TV will take interest which should add to the feel-good factor. The event will take place at 6.00pm and will be followed by a barbecue. |
Divot party
There will be a divot party on Wednesday, 16 May at 1:30pm. Anyone interested in helping out our greenkeepers and partaking, there is a signup sheet on the notice board at the Club.

Let’s face it: we all want to hit the ball further. Being able to hit longer drives gives you less club into the green, making everything that little bit easier. There are many ways you can try and generate more power during your swing, and nearly all of them start from the ground up. |
Trust your footwear Despite his small frame, tour star Rickie Fowler is renowned for his power. As you can see in the three images above, he pushes off from his right foot through impact and relies on great grip and stability to ensure the power his body is creating doesn’t come at the cost of control. Having a strong base is something we should all aspire for. The Mizuno Wave Cadence can help you do this thanks to its unique Wave midsole that was originally created for runners seeking stability, plus its durable spikes will give you reliable traction across all terrains. |
