Something a little bit different This week and last sees both sides of the pond doing their bit to drive golf forwards into the 21st century, with the aim of attracting a fresh crop of people to the game. Part of the reason the Ryder Cup makes for such fascinating viewing is that of the different formats played (foursomes, fourball betterball and singles matchplay) and the team ethos across the week. Well, last week’s PGA Tour event had something similar where pairs played two rounds of foursomes and fourball betterball across the four days. A glance down the leaderboard will highlight plenty of potential Ryder Cup pairings, from Rose & Stenson to Garcia & Cabrera-Bello, as well as David Duval & Jim Furyk trying to rewind the years. At the end of the play, it was American duo Billy Horschel & Scott Piercy who finished top of the pile with a four-day total of 22-under-par. Back to this side of the Atlantic where the second edition of GolfSixes hits the spotlight this weekend. There will be a number of firsts during this innovative event, none more so than when Thomas Bjorn & Catriona Matthews tee it up together to become the first male and female professionals to play together in a competitive matchplay format on the European Tour. What do you make of these events? Let us know here. |
How does a FREE custom fitting and FREE lesson sound?
It's so important for golfers of all abilities - particularly amateurs, who have far more to gain - to get custom fitted, as opposed to leaving it to chance, like you'd be doing if you bought standard spec clubs straight off the shelf. You really have nothing to lose. We will help you to get the most out of any new equipment through a thorough custom fitting process before you buy, followed by a lesson to see you on your way. Come and speak to us in-store if you're interested, but remember this offer is only available until Sunday, 1 July. This offer runs for Callaway, Mizuno and PING equipment. |

125th Anniversary - Fastest round of Golf
On Friday 13th July, as a part of the 125th anniversary celebrations we are to make an attempt on the world record for “The Fastest Round Of Golf by a Team of Players”. According to the Guinness book this stand at 13 minutes and 52 seconds and is held by Farnham Golf Club. This is somewhat confusing because twenty-five years ago a team accomplished this feat in twelve minutes! There is no limit to the size of the team and so the more members, men, ladies and juniors we have taking part, the greater are our chances of success.
We are hoping that as many of you as possible will join in this piece of enjoyment. Low handicap players will be playing the tee shots and groups of golfers will be positioned ready to advance the ball to the green, where chippers and putters will be holing out. As soon as one hole is completed the next tee shot is struck. The record does not require the same ball to be used throughout the round. We will also need members to indicate the direction of the tee shots and at some holes to telegraph ‘Go’ to the next tee shot. We hope that the press and local TV will take interest which should add to the feel-good factor. The event will take place at 6.00pm and will be followed by a barbecue. |
