Course Report 2015
As ever the weather determined what happened on the course this season. The spring was quite mild, and we avoided the cold winds that often arrive in April. The summer was reasonable with the exception of August which was very wet. The autumn and early winter have been incredibly mild and damp.
Greens:
The greens recovered well from the winter fusarium, and the sward thickened in the mild conditions. By early May the greens were becoming faster, and were true. These conditions remained more or less until early autumn.
Unfortunately the very mild and damp conditions has encouraged fusarium to reappear in recent weeks. Our agronomist has recommended that we tine or slit our greens around twelve times a year. This has been achieved on the wettest greens, and slightly less on the drier ones. We are able to measure the moisture content of each green, and take the appropriate action. The work we undertook on the 14th to allow more light onto green has worked as it has become drier.
Fairways:
The fairways have been in reasonable condition all year, and have been left a little longer than in the past. The mole draining undertaken last winter has taken longer to recover than was hoped. However, it is settling down, and the worst of the drainage lines have been turfed.
Winter Work:
The banking created by the 14th green has made it easier to maintain, and looks neater. Last winter we carried out work on the wood to the right of the 14th fairway. The objective was to take out some trees to allow the better ones to flourish, and to clear the bramble and ivy.
As a result we uncovered a carpet of bluebells in the spring. Work has started on the wooded area between the 17th and 18th. Here hard wood trees will be planted to replace some of the invasive sycamores. This years' winter programme has been affected by the weather.
The very mild conditions have encouraged unprecedented grass growth. The greens have been cut at least three times a week, and all areas of the course have needed cutting. Work on the new 16th green will commence as soon as possible.
I should like to thank the greenstaff for all their conscientious work which has given us such an enjoyable course to play.
